Boris Zhurkin - painter
(1931—1998)
Boris graduated from Dushanbe College of Arts in 1955 and worked
as a staff illustrator with the local publishing house up until
1959, when he decided to enroll in the Tashkent Institute of
Performing and Fine Arts. After graduation Boris moved to Fergana
where he lived and worked for the rest of his life.
He is famous for using a unique technique of applying oil paints
to photographic paper. For many years the technique remained
a well guarded secret, but we are now somewhat familiar with
how he painted. He would place a large piece of paper on something
that resembled a mill-wheel, which rotated while Boris used
sharp knives of various shapes to spatter and mix paint on this
rotating wheel.
His paintings are truly unique and beautiful, with morphing
shapes and lines, great palette, and intricate details. You
can spend hours looking at his pieces and you'll be surprised
how many invisible details appear as if from nowhere...
